The Allgemeine Musik-Gesellschaft Zürich
Zurich’s “General Music Society” came into being in 1812, with the merger of the city’s previous music societies, and dominated musical life in the city until the foundation of the Tonhalle Society in 1867. This exhibition looks back at memorable events in the history of the AMG and its predecessors, such as the concerts of the young Mozart, who spent time in Zurich with his family in 1766, and Richard Wagner’s appearances with the AMG orchestra; in passing, it also documents aspects of the Society’s day-to-day work through excerpts from articles of association, building contracts, rehearsal plans and other written records. These are complemented by precious items from the AMG’s library of sheet music, which has been preserved by the Zentralbibliothek since 1917, as well as New Year publications and concert programmes both historical and more recent.
