Music at the National Exhibition of 1883 in Zurich
Documents from the ZB’s Music Department and Department of Prints and Drawings recall the musical events accompanying the National Exhibition of 1883 in Zurich. The exhibition covers a wide variety of topics, from the official festive cantata composed by Friedrich Hegar and Gottfried Keller specially for the event to the presentation of Swiss musical instrument construction; and from the light salon music created for the Exhibition and published in Zurich to the memorable visit by the orchestra of La Scala in Milan – one of the celebrated ensemble’s first-ever performances abroad. The visit was intended to symbolise the coming-together of cultures following the opening of the Gotthard rail tunnel in 1881.
