An artist of semitones
September 2007 marks the 30th anniversary of Paul Burkhard’s death. The enduring appeal of his works is due in no small part to the breadth of his oeuvre: the global hit “O mein Papa” from the dialect comedy “Der schwarze Hecht” is as popular on stage today as the liturgical children’s play “D’Zäller Wiehnacht”.
The exhibition presents a portrait of the musician, composer and conductor Paul Burkhard, who was born in Zurich in 1911, from his childhood and youth in the city via jobs at the Stadttheater Bern, Schauspielhaus Zürich and the Beromünster Radio Orchestra to his retreat to Zell im Tösstal, where he worked as a freelance artist. It also focuses on his music and its genesis – music that, in its originality and diversity, made Burkhard one of the most successful Swiss composers ever.
