As an academic cantonal, city and university library open to the public, the Zentralbibliothek Zürich collects publications from and about Zurich (Turicensia)

The ZB collects as comprehensively as possible, makes its holdings accessible, and ensures they are preserved safely. It thus plays a role of prime importance in the canton’s historical and cultural memory. Looking to the future, the new Zurich Open Platform (ZOP) will enable it to continue fulfilling its mandate of collecting material about Zurich – from new, digitally born publications to important digitised holdings from the 19th and 20th centuries. The most valuable sections of the historical Turicensia collections up to 1800 were systematically digitised between 2013 and 2018 as part of the DigiTUR project, and made accessible via the Swiss platforms e-codices, e-manuscripta and e-rara.

Zurich Open Platform is an open access repository based on the open-source software DSpace. The partner involved in building the platform was the Berlin-based company The Library Code, a service provider that is instrumental in developing DSpace.

ZOP sees itself as a starting point for thematic research about Zurich in its regional, national and international contexts. There are plans to make further publications accessible on the platform, in cooperation with public institutions from the city and canton of Zurich.
